Setting Up the AI Assistant

To unlock the full potential of the AI Assistant, you must bridge the connection between your WordPress site and a powerful AI model. This guide provides a comprehensive, step-by-step walkthrough to ensure a secure, stable, and cost-effective setup.

Prerequisites

You have two choices for the AI “Brain”. You only need one.

  • Option A: OpenAI (Standard) – The creators of ChatGPT. Reliable and easy.
  • Option B: OpenRouter (Recommended for Cost) – A gateway that lets you use DeepSeek, Claude, Llama, and cheaper models.

Option A: OpenAI Setup (Standard)

  1. Sign Up: Go to platform.openai.com.
  2. Payment Method: Add a credit card (Settings > Billing). Note: The “ChatGPT Plus” $20 subscription does NOT work here. You need API credits.
  3. Generate Key:
    • Go to API Keys in the sidebar.
    • Click “+ Create new secret key”.
    • Name it “Spin Wheel Plugin”.
    • Copy the key (starts with sk-...).

Option B: OpenRouter Setup (Cheaper & Flexible) 🚀

OpenRouter is a popular alternative that gives you access to models like DeepSeek V3, Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Llama 3.

  • Why use it? It is often significantly cheaper (DeepSeek is ~90% cheaper than GPT-4o) and uncensored.
  • No Monthly Fee: Like OpenAI, you pay only for what you use.
  1. Sign Up: Go to openrouter.ai.
  2. Add Credits: Go to “Credits” and add as little as $5.
  3. Generate Key:
    • Go to Keys.
    • Click “Create Key”.
    • Name it “WordPress Spin Wheel”.
    • Copy the key (starts with sk-or-v1-...).

Connecting the Plugin

Now that you have your key (from either OpenAI or OpenRouter):

  1. Log in to your WordPress Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Spin Wheel > Settings.
  3. Click on the Integrations tab.
  4. Scroll down to the AI Assistant section.

Configuration Steps

  1. Select Provider:
    • Dropdown: Choose OpenAI or OpenRouter.
  2. Paste Key:
    • Paste your sk-... (OpenAI) or sk-or-v1-... (OpenRouter) key.
  3. Save: Click “Save Settings”.

Verification & First Run

Did it work? Let’s test it.

  1. Refresh your browser.
  2. Look at the bottom-right corner. You should see a Floating Robot Icon.
  3. Click it. The chat window expands.
  4. Test: Click the “Overview” quick prompt. If it replies with data, you are live!

Understanding Costs (The Math)

Many users are afraid of “Hidden Costs.” Let’s clear that up.

  • Pay-As-You-Go: API usage is not a subscription. You pay pennies per request.
  • Cost Comparison:
    • OpenAI (GPT-4o): Excellent intelligence. Cost: ~$0.03 per analysis.
    • OpenRouter (DeepSeek V3): Similar intelligence. Cost: ~$0.002 per analysis (10x Cheaper).
  • Billing Limit: Always set a “Hard Limit” in your provider’s dashboard (e.g., $5/month) so you never accidentally overspend.

If you see this error:

  1. OpenAI: Your free trial credits expired. Add a credit card.
